Dubuque, OA

Last night, we tired of driving at Dubuque, Iowa, and pulled into a Wal-Mart lot for the night. I searched online what to do and found it to be quite an interesting city. We decided to stay an extra day and explore. What a treat! The first thing we did was to drive the 4 miles to Fenelon Place Elevator. Built In 1884, a local banker who lived at the top of the hill wanted to be able to go home for lunch, have a nap and go back to work, but it was a 1/2 hour drive in his horse & buggy each way. so, he decided a cable car would solve his problem. We rode it down 189' from 4th street to Fenelon Place. magnificent view of the river and 3 states from the top! The 2 little old cable cars each hold 8 people, and jerk along making us hope the cables were in good shape! We walked all over the town, took a free cable car ride all through town while the driver gave us a lot of history, then rode the elevator back up (round trip ride was only $2 each) and came back to the RV. Was a hoot! Had a wonderful lunch on the riverwalk overlooking the Mississippi River. Also talked with several people who told of other places we should try to visit on our trek! Al took some better photos, but so far, I have not been able to upload his! Same troubles I had with mine, which mysteriously started working. The town is very people oriented, and they started renovating about 7 years ago, a block at a time by acquiring grants. All the old buildings, and sites belong to the city. Museum, Acquariam, old jail, courthouse, town clock, etc. Oh, I almost forgot about the Shot Tower. Built in 1856 It was used to make military lead shots. Drops of lead were dropped through a grate, down into the cold river where they became spherical to use as shots. Can't go inside, but it was interesting. If and when I get Al's pics, will post one he took of this. We could probably spend a couple days exploring here, but want to get across Illinois to Indiana to get the fridge fixed.

  1. Just love hearing from you two!! Hope once you get your frige fixed you can "leasurly" enjoy the trip without an agenda to be anywhere. We are blessed to live in the USA, the most beautiful nation on earth. And, although, our government isn't doing the job we would like today, it is still the best out there!
